In 2008, representatives from SEED, Sweetwater Independent School District, and several local business leaders formed a committee to work together on a mission to bridge the gap between education and business. The first project was the Senior Interview day held in April of 2009. The overview of the program, geared for the seniors from Sweetwater, would be to have them write a resume, fill out a proper employment application, and go through a mock interview using community business leaders as the interviewers. They would be graded on all three parts of the process. We have just finished our third year and have included Roscoe High School in the process for the past two years. As an expansion to the interview process, we were able to start a Speakers Bureau at Roscoe ISD that included all students from 7th grade through seniors. Twice a month, we would arrange for business and community leaders to come to the school and “tell their story”, a road map so to speak, as to their education and work history. This presents an opportunity to see the process used to improve yourself in your work environment and how your education track fits into your future. It has also allowed the student to gain a better understanding about the businesses in Nolan County and what it takes to get into that career field.
